The Museum was built 1860 of local stone as a telegraph station, and was designed by the Colonial Architect.
The museum portrays the local history of Gawler and district with displays of objects in context, located in a Heritage listed building this is a fine two-storeyed stone structure initially built to house a telegraph office and first used in 1861. Subsequent uses include a school of mines and an electoral office, and most recently for the Gawler Museum.
Significant items in the museum’s collection include: a Triola, Aoelian Orchestralle, box piano, Paternosters’ musical instrument, John McKinlay’s travelling chests, Timer fashion dresses and Hoffman’s pottery. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday, 1.00pm – 4.00pm, or by appointment. The entry fees are relatively low, with only 3$ per adult and 2.5$ for concession.
Two school programs are offered at the Gawler Museum in the ‘Old Telegraph Office’. One is tuned to the Year 5 History curriculum. It’s hands on and includes Gawler’s local history of migration, discovery of mystery objects, MP3 guided trail through the museum, and the technology of daily living, entertainment and communication.
The second is aligned to Years 2 and 3 of the Technology curriculum. It’s hands-on and includes communication, entertainment, home equipment and technologies, food and Industries. We consider distinguishing between past, present and future. In both programs, students are rotated through four short lessons in groups of 7-8.
