Cardiologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating maladies related to the heart, blood vessels and cardiovascular system. You might hear cardiologists also referred to as heart doctors, cardiac surgeons, heart physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, electrophysiologists, pediatric cardiologists, angiologists or cardiology specialists. Common ailments treated by cardiologists include anemia, atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), breathing problems, cardiac arrest, chest pain, congenital heart birth defects, coronary artery disease, Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries (D-TGP), heart arrythmia, heart attack (myocardial infarction), hypertension (high blood pressure), insulin resistance, persistent truncus arteriosus, ventricular fibrillation and Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome.
